Social Media

Does your company have a social media presence?

Not the best strategy! Let's develop a winning solution for your news flow.

I’m sure the answer is yes. But have you and your team ever experienced ‘update burnout’? Perhaps your company’s Linkedin group has gone to sleep? Or maybe your inspiration for tweets is running on empty?

I can help with content updates for your external or internal social networks, micro-sites or corporate blogs. As an experienced community manager, I know how to create attention-getting topics. When I first started working in social media, I asked experts for strategic advice.

One of the best tips I received was from a man who manages the social media strategy for a huge global company. You might imagine that his advice was very high-level and complex.  Here’s what it was…to create a believable and successful online presence ‘show up and be yourself’.

  • be accessible and pay attention to your audience
  • be honest – don’t exaggerate, hide or over-promise
  • have content that is inviting to read, interesting to watch, and regularly updated
  • give people value-added takeaways (information, advice, solve their problems, share success, etc.)
  • maintain a moderation style that engages people to build a sense of loyalty and participation.

These key elements create an environment that welcomes people to share, tell others about their experience, and to come back.

Community manager experience

I am a community manager for two popular social networking groups on Linkedin and xing.com.

Manager:  “Friends of Ireland” – Linkedin

Friends of Ireland is a social networking forum with 4,100+ professional members. I have dual citizenship with Ireland and I enjoy sharing the best of Irish culture, current news and history with a global audience.

Owner/Manager:  “Business with a Smile” – xing.com

The target audience is professionals in emerging economies. To build a sense of community, I created a cafe-style concept.  Discussing business over a cup of tea or coffee  is a positive and familiar metaphor for members in Middle East and  Eurasian countries. It has been a very effective way to build active discussion and share business topics.  The long-running “Break Room” thread, focusing on Twitter-like comments about daily life and work activities, has to-date 1,330 postings and over 5,800 hits.

Social networking is also having fun!

Commenting on my favorite quotes makes new contacts and puts me into the "Influencer" category on Linkedin

Speaker on social media topics

At ESSEC University in Paris, I give workshops for MBA students on how to create a compelling social media profile and gain professional exposure using social networking sites.

Active blogger

I have personal and professional blogs and I advise others on how to start blogging for social networking or to gain professional visibility.  My blogs were reviewed and approved for the blog directory at Technorati.com, the  “most comprehensive and current index of who and what is most popular in the Blogosphere.”
